About SubCo
SubCo was founded in 1993, building on the work of local groups such as ASRA, and bringing together many talented people in the Asian community from such organisations as Newham Council, Newham Monitoring Project, and the Race Equality Foundation. SubCo started life as a daycare centre, providing important food services and housing advocacy, and giving Asian elders the chance to experience holidays abroad. Their work has since tackled issues of loneliness, mental health in elderly carers, dementia, and end of life care. They have also opened themselves to groups of young people and to inter-generational work. Although there have been some challenging times, SubCo's long history and continued success to this day is a testament to the hard work and dedication of its staff.
'Growing Old Gracefully' is an oral history project to celebrate SubCo's 25th anniversary. We are interviewing current staff and service users, as well as those involved in the founding of SubCo, to uncover the wonderful history of such a valued organisation. At the same time, we are going to build a one-of-a-kind spoken archive that will give a great insight into social care provision, community organising, and the politics of race in Newham. It is important that the project contains a comprehensive training programme, which will enable a team of volunteers to take charge of the project delivery. The exhibition and booklet we produce will not just be the people's stories in their own words, therefore, but will also be facilitated to a large degree by the community itself.
Eastside Community Heritage seeks to build, service and enable partnerships which record, document and preserve the experiences of different communities. We do this through the provision of social, cultural, educational and historical activities. Our methodology incorporates education and training with schools, families and adult learners. Eastside produces exhibitions, publications and all kinds of multi-media, giving the opportunity to all cultures and ages to engage in a proactive discovery of their own and their community’s histories, culture and heritage.
This project was made possible through the support of the National Lottery Heritage Fund.
